Sunset in the Outer Banks

It’s often been said that “a picture is worth a thousand words.” Whoever first uttered these words obviously did so before the preponderance of cell phone images and social network photo sharing. I’m a bit old school when it comes to photography. I relish capturing a moment in time and returning to it again and again, discovering new details and observations.

Last weekend, I took this sunset photo along the Currituck Sound in Outer Banks of North Carolina in the town of Duck. During the summer months, Duck’s population explodes with vacationers, but throughout the spring and fall, the place returns back into a sleepy coastal town. As we walked along the boardwalk, the stillness along the water was absolutely deafening. God’s creation was magnified in that moment. Today, I wanted to share a little of that serenity with you.

Do you ever stop and consider the stories behind photos? What types of images speak to you?

By the way, I’ve added this image to my Photography Shop. There you will find a collection of my work, available for purchase on high quality wall canvases. I have two hanging in my office at work. Recently a coworker commented that they were so beautiful that they looked like oil paintings. These make beautiful additions to any home or office.

Chris – great photo, I can imagine how calm the water was in this setting, pretty surreal. I see stories in pictures, and I think we all did at some point as children before we could read. I haven’t seen any adult picture books, but it there was, this picture should be in it!

Thanks so much Dan! At the rate I’m going, maybe a nice sunset book should be in the works.

Pictures can be writing prompts as much as words can be. I have used them in the past idea generators, and I am reminded here to go back to doing that more often. I love nature photography like this, and I find it very inspiring for writing.

Kari, great point. Even if we can’t spend time in nature for inspiration, we can always look at the images for inspiration. Not only that, but photos can help us recall stories to incorporate into writing.

    That is a beautiful pic.
Water at sunset is one of my favorite pictures. It brings peace to my mind and puts me in awe of God.
When life gets hectic I often meditate on a mental picture of calm waters at sunset and it helps me get into an attitude of praise for the awesome God who created it all.
    Thanks for sharing.

Thanks so much TC. Like you, sunset photos are my favorites. I can never take enough or see enough of them. There is something majestic and calming in those moments, as God seems to save His most beautiful artistic work for sunrise and sunset.

Wow, that’s awesome. I might make that my desktop image – although looking at it makes me want to head to the beach. I live in NC, so it’s just a hop-skip-and-a-jump away for me to get to the Outer Banks!

Thanks so much Loren! What part of NC do you live in? Hope you get a chance to head to the beach soon, or least once it warms up again.
